Hospitalisation Facilities and Care
If your horse does need to come to our Clinic at Laughton for investigations or treatment you will find our friendly team of nurses and yard staff will welcome you
Stables
There are 8 loose boxes available at the yard for in patients, even if you are only stopping for an hour or so. A member of the nursing team will ensure your horse is provided with hay and water while you stay.
The stables are comfortable even for the very large breeds as well as mares with foals at foot.
Should your horse be required to stay overnight feeding and any other special requirements will be recorded and your horse taken care of appropriately. We will provide feed and hay; all you will need to bring are any rugs usually worn and a head collar and lead rope or bridle.
The stables are all bedding with cardboard to ensure the cleanest and most dust free environment to cater for all our patients.
Intensive and Critical Care
Some of our patients require intensive or critical care while staying with us. These may range from horses requiring intravenous fluids; intensive 24 hour treatments; or those who are very sick requiring round the clock care and attention. Our experienced nursing team play a vital role in providing the intensive care for these patients.
Isolation Facilities
In the unlikely circumstance that your horse succumbs to a particularly infectious disease, but requires hospitalisation at our Clinic, there is a separate isolation facility on site.
This stable is separate to the main buildings and a separate supply of bedding, feed and equipment is used for this area. Members of staff that are treating the isolated patient do not come into contact with patients in the main facility without showering and changing clothes. This ensures we not only provide dedicated care to the isolated patient, but also that the main yard patients are not a risk of disease spread or cross-contamination.
After the isolation facility has been used all bedding is discarded and the area and equipment are disinfected thoroughly.
Nursing Staff
The nursing team is comprised of 5 members, all of whom are experienced with handling all ages and sizes of horses, ponies and donkeys. The nurses are vital in the running of this hospital yard; ensuring your horse is excellently cared for throughout their stay and liaising with the vets. They will ring you every morning to keep you to date with your horse’s well-being and condition.
Weigh Bridge
Inside the hospital building there is a weigh bridge allowing us to accurately assess your horse’s body weight. This especially important with hospitalised patients to allow us to provide the correct drug dosages, as well as monitoring the condition of your horse throughout the stay with us.
If you are visiting the clinic for any reason and would like to know your horse’s actual body weight to compare to weigh tape measurements, especially for worming; please do not hesitate to ask a member of our team while you are here.
